Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System - YESS

The secret of our YESS system is twofold: First, it provides minimum contact of hardware with shell; second, it connects that hardware at the nodal point* of the drum - the point at which it will not interfere with shell vibration. Nylon bushings on rod clamps afford maximum stability. The YESS system permits toms to be placed close together, and does not interfere with quick head changes. On floor toms, our YESS system offers wide open sustain while keeping toms stable under the heaviest strokes. * Nodal point mounting is patented by the Noble & Cooley Drum Company.

Ball Mount & Clamp
A tribute to Yamaha design technology, our original ball mount and clamp has gone through very few modifications over the years. A large, ultra-hard resin ball sits in an attractive chromed housing, held in place with a titanium ergonomic wing bolt. It is the ultimate drummer-friendly mount, offering non-slip positioning virtually anywhere the drummer can imagine. Additionally, it permits tuning of the bottom head by simply rotating the drum.

As a result, the PHX was created with the widest dynamic range of any drums created by Yamaha and an even greater, richer, mid-low response. Handcrafted by our expert technicians, it is rooted in over 50 years of history, tradition, experience and technology in an all-out pursuit of the ultimate in drum craftsmanship and sound.

The unique Hybrid shell was designed to perfectly achieve the three targets of the PHX concept - more volume, more tone and more dynamic range.

The shell uses the hardest and heaviest wood, jatoba, for the center core. The jatoba is surrounded on either side by layers of kapur, another hard and heavy wood. Then, surrounding the kapur is North American maple, the softest wood in the whole shell, which is used for the outer and inner shell plies. This construction allows the shell to vibrate perfectly, free of constraint.

Countless trials, prototyping and sound checking with artists went into finding the perfect shell make-up for PHX.

Bearing Edge
The bearing edge is the single most important element and dictates the tone and articulation of each PHX shell.

All PHX bearing edges are cut at 30-degrees. However, what makes each type of shell different - whether it be a tom, floor tom or bass drum - is the radius of the top of each bearing edge. These radiuses are where the drumhead touches the wood of the shell, and their size allows more or less vibration to pass from the head to the shell.

Therefore, the bass drum edge creates a clearer and sharper sound, while the tom edge produces a fatter, more rounded sound.

The bearing edges are shaped by craftsmen who have specialized knowledge of the characteristics of each wood. During rounds of sanding and special surface finishing, each edge gradually becomes perfectly shaped for its intended use.

Hardware
The lugs, tom mounting system and hoops have a crucial role in achieving the perfect drum sound.

The PHX uses the Y.E.S.S. II system for mounting the toms, which is perfectly matched to the hybrid shell. It is super stable and comfortably supports the thick PHX shell while bringing out its natural resonance without compromise. The mounting plate itself is made of the same maple as is used on the outer plies of the hybrid shell, further contributing to its rich resonance and enhanced low end.

The hook lug on the PHX was designed with a small footprint, which doesn’t disturb the shell vibration and accentuates the fundamental tone. In addition, the unique 3 mm aluminum die-cast hoop features high rigidity and extremely light weight, so it maximizes the head resonance and creates a rich, melodic tone with a full attack.

The PHX is not only packed with great features that make it a fantastic drum kit, but it also has all the beauty of an exquisite, handmade musical instrument.

From the selection of the outer ply chosen by the customer to be either traditional maple or stunningly textured ash, the decision-making process begins. The shell is repeatedly painted and sanded, and then polished to a beautifully thin, final finish that is extremely hard and fully realizes the beauty and depth of the chosen outer veneer.

Furthermore, the hook lugs and aluminum die-cast hoops are available in either chrome or gold to match or contrast with the shells perfectly.

New Weighted High-Tension Lugs Yamaha Drums.

The revamped modern design retains the traditional essence of the Recording Custom. However, in order to maximize the attenuating properties of the birch wood, we increased the weight of the lug, further enhancing the artist's expressive power and reducing undesirable noise from the shell without using a mute. This ensures optimum sustain for the core sound, producing a crisp, articulate tone.

All-Birch Shell

In addition to their punchy power, birch shells are known to reduce unwanted noise and prevent interference when drums are set up side-by-side. The unique, sonic characteristics of birch wood ensure that each stroke is clearly delineated, making it the ideal choice for recording environments.

Lifted-Style Bass Drum

Steve prefers a 20-inch, lifted bass drum, so we adopted this specification.

We reduced interference from the floor to maximize the resonance of the shell, and we increased the length of the pedal beater rod, centering it precisely to ensure absolute accuracy during performances.

This lifted bass drum produces a more punchy sound and accentuates the sound produced in the core of the shell.

R1.5/3-Degree Bearing Edge

While testing many combinations of shells, Steve Gadd opted for 30-degree bearing edges to deliver a sharp response. The shells have a wide tuning range. They respond well to different head choices and are easy to tune.

Coated Head

Toms and floor toms are equipped with Remo Ambassador Coated heads, which are known for their warm, clear tone and open, resonant sound quality. Bass drums are fitted with a PS3 Smooth White Yamaha logo head and a Remo PS3 coated batter head (18" bass drum batter side features a Remo Ambassador Coated head).

Y.E.S.S. Mount Yamaha Drums.

Brackets and shells are connected using the smallest possible contact area, so resonance damping is minimal. This is the basic concept behind the development of the Y.E.S.S. mounting system.

Where it was previously necessary to adjust the rod length to attain optimal resonance, or in some cases to subdue an excessively resonant shell, Y.E.S.S. makes it easy to achieve your ideal sound without these modifications.

Floor Tom Brackets

Floor tom brackets include wing bolts designed to clamp tightly on the leg without damaging it, to save time onstage and deliver outstanding decay control.

Die-Cast Bass Drum Hooks

The Live Custom Hybrid Oak shell concept is borrowed from our flagship PHX and Absolute Hybrid Maple kits, which feature a dense phenolic sheet sandwiched between two sheets of oak ply. Always a pioneer in the field of oak drums, Yamaha has enhanced the dynamic range of the new Live Custom by accentuating its attack and projection.

uzukuri Finish

The traditional Japanese finishing technique known as uzukuri has been modified for use on drum shells. In this procedure, the soft areas in the wood grain are sanded and the entire shell is coated with a thin layer of black paint. Hybrid Maple Shell

The Absolute Hybrid series inherited the hybrid shell technology found on our flagship PHX series. Absolute Hybrid shells consist of a core ply of wenge, a very hard and heavy wood native to Africa, wedged between plies of maple, known for its clear tone. This hybrid design delivers a rich, clear tone across a full dynamic range, from pianissimo to fortissimo.

Hook Lugs

Hook lugs offer quick and easy head replacement, precision tuning and can readily withstand high-tension tuning. Lug bases are designed with a small footprint to maximize tone output from the hybrid shell.

Y.E.S.S. III

An evolutionary step up from our Y.E.S.S. II, the Y.E.S.S. III further reduces acoustic dampening, which allows the shell to vibrate more freely bringing out more of its natural sustain and volume.

Low-Mass Tom Holder Base

The tom holder's small, lightweight footprint allows the bass drum shell to vibrate more freely.

Optimized Bearing Edge

The bearing edge angle on the bass drum differs from the angle on tom and snare shells. A 45-degree /R1.5 edge is used on the snare and toms to achieve a balanced tone, while the 30-degree/R1.5 edge on the bass drum creates a low-end tone, for a deeper, more powerful sound.

Vent Hole

The vent hole plays an important role in performance, since it affects not only the sensation of hitting the drum (the impact), but also the initial sound, sustain and tone.

Through an exhaustive series of prototypes, Yamaha has discovered the optimal number and vent hole position depending on the air capacity of each shell. Particularly, vent holes contribute to the enhancement of tone colors in midrange to low-frequency sounds, as well as the control of sustain.
